Frequently Asked Questions

Defining a Concentration

Special Concentrations

Q: I am interested in Biology but would like to design my own program. Can I do a special concentration?

A: Special concentrations are designed for students whose academic interests cut across departmental lines and whose educational focus cannot be met by a single concentration. For more information on Special Concentrations, contact the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Switching Concentrations

Q: How easy is it to switch concentrations, i.e., from another concentration into Biology? If I switch, will I be able to complete the requirements on time? How do I make the switch?

A: It is straightforward to switch concentrations if you come from another science department. If you come from a non-science concentration and have had few science courses, it may be difficult to fulfill the requirements. Change in Concentration forms are available from the Registrar’s Office. Contact the Biology Undergraduate Office (5-3399) for further information.

Joint Concentrations

Q: Are joint concentrations permitted between Biology and another concentration?

A: Contact the Head Tutor in Biology, Professor David Haig.
